Tether Plans to Issue USDt on RGB Protocol on Bitcoin

August 27, 2025 — Lugano, Switzerland

This article is adapted from the original announcement published by the RGB Protocol Association. Some terminology has been updated to reflect v0.11.1 conventions.

Tether has announced its intention to bring USD₮ to RGB Protocol on Bitcoin, the next-generation protocol for issuing and transacting digital assets natively on Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. The RGB Protocol Association welcomes the move as a landmark signal for builders and institutions seeking private, scalable, user-controlled asset infrastructure on the world’s most secure network.

RGB Protocol on Bitcoin reached mainnet availability in July 2025 with the v0.11.1 release, enabling developers to issue and manage assets through client-side validation with Bitcoin as the commitment layer. Asset data remains off-chain while proofs are anchored to Bitcoin transactions, reducing chain footprint, preserving privacy, and enabling full Lightning Network compatibility.

“Bitcoin deserves a stablecoin that feels truly native, lightweight, private, and scalable. With RGB, USD₮ gains a powerful new pathway on Bitcoin, reinforcing our belief in Bitcoin as the foundation of a freer financial future.”

— Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether

What USDt on RGB Means for Users

Once live, USD₮ on RGB Protocol on Bitcoin will allow users and service providers to:

  • Hold and transfer USD₮ alongside bitcoin in a single self-custodial wallet
  • Transact privately through client-side validation, with balances and flows invisible on-chain
  • Achieve instant settlement via the Lightning Network using RGB’s transport extensions

Why This Announcement Matters

RGB Protocol on Bitcoin extends Bitcoin’s role beyond a store of value, enabling stablecoins, tokenized assets, and programmable rights that inherit Bitcoin’s security model while keeping users in full control. Adoption by a major issuer like Tether can drive wallet support, merchant adoption, and cross-chain liquidity, all without new L1 opcodes or changes to Bitcoin’s base layer.

For Developers and Integrators

The RGB Protocol Association invites wallets, exchanges, payment processors, and infrastructure providers to join working groups focused on *NIA (fungible asset)* integrations, Lightning transports, and bridge connectors for USD₮ and other assets on Bitcoin-native rails.
